Let's Hold Amazon Accountable!

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has launched its long-awaited antitrust lawsuit against Amazon. This lawsuit is challenging a host of Amazon's business practices. This is a massive chance for our voices to be heard in the fight against monopolies and to level the playing field for small businesses against giant corporations. As small business owners and allies, we must take this opportunity to speak up about how Amazon's concentrated market power has hurt small businesses.

This historic case goes headfirst against Amazon, calling out how they have used back doors to ensure they remain in control of the consumer market. Amazon has driven many small businesses out of business through these tactics and by manipulating small business owners to concentrate market power.

The FTC case addresses Amazon's following business practices:

  • Amazon Prime: Initially only a subscription for free shipping, it now has books, music, and video streaming. The subscription has allowed a loophole for Amazon to consolidate media market power in one place.

  • Amazon Sellers: Businesses that use Amazon to sell their goods are forced to switch to Amazon's logistics and punished when they do not by their listing placements on the website

  • Digital Ads: Amazon convinces merchants to purchase ads, giving priority placement in customer search results based on their history of purchasing ads
