Washington State Passes Paid Family Leave

The Main Street Alliance is celebrating a significant victory for small business and working families in Washington state. After deep bipartisan negotiations, Paid Family and Medical Leave was signed into law last week in Olympia, making Washington the fifth state in the nation to provide this benefits to all workers!

This legislation represents a big win for Main Street Alliance, and it’s member small businesses, who have been working towards a solution for this issue for over three years! MSA was influential in the final push, collecting letters of support for the policy from small business owners to deliver to local lawmakers, like Senator Joe Fain (R, 47th) who sponsored one of the bills in negotiation.

The message from small businesses across the state was clear: Washington must be a leader in providing this important protection to workers, no matter the size of their company. For small businesses, this policy will level the playing field, allowing owners to easily and affordably to provide the same benefits as large corporations.

The law, which will go into effect in 2020, allows new parents or family caretakers to take 12 weeks of paid leave, receiving up to 90% of their wages, based on their earning status. This progressive policy is a game changer for healthy families and communities, and will serve as an example for the rest of the nation.

`At the Main Street Alliance, we know that when small business owners come together to support good values, we can achieve positive change and make a Washington a state where small businesses can thrive! We thank you for supporting the work we do!
