Main Street Alliance business owners urge Senate to support the For the People Act
Democracy reforms will support small business owners
Washington, DC –On the Senate request for a floor vote on the For the People’s Act (HR1) today, Executive Director of the Main Street Alliance, Amanda Ballantyne had this to say:
“Market consolidation is making it impossible for small businesses to compete, and corporations are getting away with it with undue control over the political process through special interests and money in politics. From consolidation and monopolization to giant corporations not paying their fair share of taxes, small businesses are being squeezed in the marketplace and cut out of government support and access to capital.
A first step to repairing this is passing the For the People Act of 2019 (H.R. 1) which provides essential solutions to money in politics, gerrymandering, ethics abuses and voting rights barriers, measures needed to repair our currently broken democracy. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has let the law languish, even though it passed the House. The Senate must take this up for the protection of our democracy and a healthy small business economy. “
