Sanders Will Headline Rally, joined by a Small Business Owner and Others Urging Constituents to Hold Republicans Accountable for Raising Taxes on Middle-Class Iowans
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — On Friday, February 23, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) will join the Repeal the Trump Tax Tour in Cedar Rapids to pressure lawmakers to repeal Republicans' unpopular tax plan.
Joining the 100-day, nationwide tour that launched last month, Senator Sanders will rally alongside community leaders and grassroots activists holding Republicans accountable for voting in favor of a law that overwhelmingly benefits the top 1 percent. The event is being coordinated in partnership with Progress Iowa, Keep Iowa Healthy, Iowa Citizen Action Network, Indivisible Iowa, Americans for Democratic Action Iowa, Iowa Main Street Alliance, and the Iowa Alliance for Retired Americans.
Senator Sanders previously headlined the “Protect Working Families” tour hosted by Not One Penny with rallies in Louisville, KY, Dayton and Akron, OH, and Reading, PA. Senator Sanders and progressive grassroots organizers will continue mobilizing constituents opposed to the Republican tax bill that raises taxes on 92 million middle-class families and strips health care from 13 million people.
“First, we had the Trump tax plan, one of the worst pieces of legislation in the modern history of our country,” said Senator Bernie Sanders. “Now, it's a morally bankrupt budget that pays for his huge tax breaks for the rich and large corporations by slashing Medicaid by $1.3 trillion, cutting Medicare by $554 billion and slicing $10 billion from the Social Security Disability Insurance Program. This budget is nothing less than a major transfer of wealth from the middle class and working families to the top 1 percent and large corporations. We must stand together across this country and fight for a progressive agenda that works for all Americans, not just a wealthy few.”
“We are hitting the road again with Senator Sanders to stand up to the billionaire class that is further rigging our economy,” said Nicole Gill, Tax March Executive Director and a Not One Penny coalition member. “The TrumpTax is nothing more than a looting of the middle class to line the pockets of wealthy corporations. We are taking our message across the country because we know the American people are sick of the well-connected being catered to at the expense of working families.”
“We’ve been hearing for months that this tax bill is going to help small businesses,” said ReShonda Young, owner of Iowa-based Popcorn Heaven and a member of the Main Street Alliance. “It’s not. Republicans are bankrupting our public piggy bank by cutting trillions in tax for big corporations and very rich people, and that means in the long run, it’s going to get a lot harder to start and sustain small businesses.”
