    Dear Senator/Representative,

We, the undersigned business owners, urge you to oppose the American Health Care Act or any proposed legislation which slashes Medicaid’s budget, destabilizes the private market, or threatens to take away quality, affordable health coverage from the millions of Americans insured through the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Medicaid, or Medicare.

The ACA works for small business owners through:

    • Stabilizing health care premiums, helping us to better plan out our finances, manage our businesses, and invest money otherwise spent on health care costs into our company.

    • Expanding coverage to millions of Americans, meaning more financial stability for our customers.

    • Fostering entrepreneurship among lower-Income business owners by creating new, portable insurance options for small business owners and eliminating the job-lock.

The Republican’s American Health Care Act  is a disaster for U.S. small businesses. If enacted, the bill would:

    • Increase health care costs for small business owners and our employees. The proposal eliminates the ACA tax subsidies and small business tax credit, as well as community ratings or uniform risk pools--key provisions that have kept costs under control for small business owners. Health care costs would increase, on average, by $1,542 per person.

    • Collapse the private market, escalating health care costs for small business owners. Over 7 million people with private insurance would lose coverage, many of whom are small business owners.

    • Squash entrepreneurship and stall job growth - higher cost of coverage for small business owners would mean less money to hire new employees, making it harder to create jobs.

    • Cripple the economy - cuts to ACA, Medicaid, and Medicare would syphon billions of dollars out of local economies, harming state budgets, and destroying vital programs that small business rely on. Over 2.6 million jobs would be lost, gross state products would fall by $1.5 trillion between 2019 and 2023, business output would drop $2.6 trillion, resulting in $48 billion lost in state and local tax revenues.

The Republican plan does nothing to  strengthen the quality, cost or coverage of health care. It rolls back the most important protections, returns us to the time when small business owners paid more for less coverage, got charged twice as much in administrative costs as larger groups, and small business owners had no leverage and no real choices.

As small business owners, we experience these effects firsthand.  Don’t play politics with our livelihood. We urge you to protect our businesses, communities, and economies, and to reject any plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act and dismantle our current health care system.

The member businesses of the Main Street Alliance and our fellow small business owners throughout the country are deeply disturbed by hateful rhetoric and violence aimed at our Muslim and Arab community members, at refugees fleeing violence, at immigrants, at women and at people of color in our communities.  This swell of hate and fear permeating our national dialogue both during and after the most recent election is dangerous. We believe it must be met head-on with clear statements of principle from local business owners because we are leaders in our communities.

America must be a place where people from all nations, races, genders, and creeds seeking freedom and opportunity feel welcome and can build safe, prosperous lives for themselves and their families. When politicians and pundits target people in our communities for political gain, when they fan the flames of hatred and fear, when they attack our neighbors, friends, family members, fellow business owners, employees, and customers, we must stand up and make our voices and our values heard loud and clear:

We oppose Trump's Executive Actions targeting Muslims, immigrants and refugees in our communities. We stand with our Muslim community members and we stand with refugees and immigrants in our community. We respect women and we value Black lives. We welcome everyone. There is no place for hate in our businesses, our homes, or in our country.
